Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to have riding experience to join the team?
No, the UCD Western Team allows individuals of all levels of experience to ride. We have members who have never ridden a horse in addition to those who have competed nationally.

Do I need to have my own horse to join the team?
No - for riders who do not want to compete or those participating in IHSA shows. The team horses are located at the Sugarland facility.
Yes - for those looking to compete with the ranch and/or rodeo team.

Can I be on multiple teams?
Yes, riders are welcome and encouraged to compete on more than one team. To find out more, please talk to the officers and/or coach.

How many times a week does the team practice?
Every team member is expected to take at least one lesson a week with our coach. Lesson options include: group lessons, semi-private, and private lessons. The lesson schedule will be established at the beginning of each quarter after new members are evaluated.

How does the team get to the barn?
The team operates on a carpool system. Team members with cars that opt to be team drivers transport the rest of the team to lessons, shows, and team events. All drivers are reimbursed for gas and often get priority to accommodate their schedules.

How much does it cost to join the team?
Because we are not funded by the school, every team member must pay team dues. Dues vary every quarter based on how much the club is able to cover through fundraisers and donations. Members using team horses pay an additional "horse use" fee. In addition, each member is expected to pay for lessons from our coach.

What equipment do I need?
We provide all the equipment the horses need such as saddles, bridles, etc. In addition, we have a set of team helmets that members are welcome to use for lessons. Comfortable (preferably long) pants and close-toed shoes with at least a 1/2" heel are required.
