Mission Statement

The UC Davis Western Equestrian Club is committed to creating a safe, fun, and competitive environment for UC Davis students who share a love of horses. With a first-class trainer and top-of-the-line facilities, the program strives to enable riders of all backgrounds to develop their horse knowledge while gaining confidence and leadership skills. Founded upon teamwork, horsemanship, and sportsmanship, the team works to provide a rewarding experience and lifelong friendships for all of its members.

The Team

The UC Davis Western Equestrian Club is a club sports team at the University of California, Davis that currently trains at our coach Kris' Property in Dunnigan, CA. The team has 20-30 regular members, who are required to take weekly lessons to improve their riding ability as well as participate in team fundraisers, team events, and quarterly team socials. We accept riders of all levels, from complete beginners to advanced riders and all in between.

We aim to make membership fees as low as possible, and we try to be as flexible as possible. Payment plans can be arranged for those who are unable to pay at the beginning of the quarter.

Team Dues: $175/quarter or $500/year

Lessons: $360/quarter for 6 2-hour long lessons

IHSA Showing membership: $45/year

Fusion Sports Insurance: $20/year

Competing

Although not required, many of our members compete on one of our three show teams.

Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA)

With a focus on horsemanship, ranch riding, and reining, the team competes in the IHSA Western Division, Zone 8, Region 1, going head to head against schools such as Stanford University, Sonoma State University, and Cal Poly SLO. Horse ownership is not a prerequisite to joining. Our riders train on our team mounts and are responsible for all aspects of their care.

A description of how IHSA horse shows are run can be found on the IHSA website www.ihsainc.org. Riders are initially placed in a specific level based on their riding background, and are given the opportunity to earn points at each competition to move up. Once a rider places out of a level, he/she becomes eligible to compete in regionals. Riders have the chance to move on to Zones and Nationals, which take place at the end of the show season. We encourage participation from riders of every level, as we hope to maintain a diverse team of all levels of talent.
